Longevity of Spices and Seasonings

Spices and seasonings don’t last forever.

When was the last time you cleaned out your rack and/or cupboard?  Did you know there is an expiration date located on the container?  McCormick has a great tool to figure out whether your spices are good – http://www.mccormick.com/Spices101.aspx  For example, they suggest that ground spices are good 2-3 years, whole spices 3-4 years, seasoning blends 1-2 years, herbs 1-3 years, and extracts 4 years.

They also suggest to “store spices in a tightly-capped container and keep them away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight. Replace their lids right after use. Avoid storing spices and herbs over the stove, near a dishwasher or sink, or near a window.” http://www.mccormick.com/Spices101/HowOldSpices/KeepingItFresh.aspx

One of my resolutions for 2011, is to simplify life.  Therefore, I completely emptied out my spice rack and cleaned out my spice cupboard.  It feels great!! 🙂
