Resolutions for the New Year :)

Happy New Year 2011

This time of year many people have a list of resolutions for the upcoming New Year.  When making resolutions (goals) remember to make both long-term and short-term ones!  To help you set your goals, here are some good guidelines using the mnemonic S.M.A.R.T.!  S = Specific, M = Measurable, A = Attainable, R = Realistic, T = Timely.  http://www.goal-setting-guide.com/goal-setting-tutorials/smart-goal-setting  It’s beneficial to review and modify them, as needed.  (Speaking of which, I will be modifying this post and adding more information!)

USA.gov states that the Top 10 most popular resolutions are: “drink less alcohol; get a better education; get a better job; get fit; lose weight; manage debt; manage stress; quit smoking now; reduce, reuse, recycle; save money; take a trip; and volunteer to help others”. (http://www.usa.gov/Citizen/Topics/New_Years_Resolutions.shtml)

Seeking a healthier lifestyle seems to be a top priority for most!  Going back to my first blog in September 2010, health is more than just adding physical activity or eating healthier to your daily routine.  Remember that it is also about balancing the physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and intellectual areas of health.  (Physical health ~ fitness, nutrition, medical self-care, and control of substance abuse.  Emotional health ~ care for emotional crisis, stress management.  Social health ~ communities, families, friends.  Intellectual health ~ educational, achievement, and career development.  Spiritual health ~ love, hope, and charity.)  If you need some guidance, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a very informative section on Healthy Living – http://www.cdc.gov/HealthyLiving/

Here are a couple of links to help you with your goals:

If EXERCISE is one of your resolutions, CDC has specific age-related guidelines under PHYSICAL ACTIVITY and EXERCISE. http://www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/everyone/guidelines/index.html

If EATING HEALTHIER is one of your resolutions, CDC also has guidelines under NUTRITION. http://www.cdc.gov/nutrition/ and http://www.cdc.gov/nutrition/professionals/index.html
