USDA Food Pyramid

USDA Food Pyramid

When is the last time you looked at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) FOOD PYRAMID?  Do you know what your current recommended servings of GRAINS (6 oz/daily), VEGETABLES (2.5 cups/daily), FRUITS (2 cups/daily), MILK (3 cups/daily), MEAT and BEANS (5.5 oz/daily), OILS, and DISCRETIONARY CALORIES are?  In future blogs, I’ll be discussing the basics of the pyramid.  Benefits of following the pyramid guidelines: A healthy, balanced diet 🙂  Recommended book: What Should I Eat? A Complete Guide to the New Food Pyramid.  By Tershia d’Elgin.  On pages 19-25, it explains why the reinvention of the pyramid occurred.  Simply…food has changed, eating has changed, the environment has changed, and lifestyles have changed.

I will also discuss the Mediterranean Food Pyramid in the near future.  It seems to be more beneficial than our USDA Food Pyramid!
